Do you want to start racing but don't how? Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions. In all instances the rules of the Motor Sports Association UK (The governing body of the sport in Britain) as set out in the MSA Competitors yearbook for 2008 applies. These notes are for guidance only.Q. What is the address of the Motor Sports Association UK? A. The Motor Sports Association, Motor Sports House, Riverside Park, Colnbrook, SL3 0HG. Tel. 01753 681736. Fax. 01753 682938. Web www.msauk.orgQ. What is the first step? A. You need to join a club. You don't have to be Welsh to join the WRDA, and we welcome new members. Click here to go to the membership application or go to www.wrda.co.ukQ. How old do I have to be to get a racing license? A. The age limits imposed by the Motor Sports Association UK (The governing body of the sport in Britain) is set out in the MSA Competitors yearbook for 2008.The minimum ages set out in section E are: Age 14 for Cars and Long track Karts (up to 210c.c); (but you must have written permission from your parent or guardian, until you are 18). Age 8 for short track Karts; (but you must have written permission from your parent or guardian, until you are 18) Q. Do I need a driving license for the road? A. It would be an advantage, but you should refer to the Motor Sports Association UK, who will give you guidance.Q. Can I get a racing license if I am disabled? A. It depends on your disability. You should refer to the Motor Sports Association UK, who will give you guidance. (This also applies to diabetes, blood pressure, and other illnesses). However you may be able to get a license for sprints and hillclimbs.Q. Are they any exemptions, if for instance I have held a license before or have got an International Kart License. A. There are some exemptions,you should refer to the Motor Sports Association UK, who will give you guidance.Q. What do I need to do next? A. First get a "GO Racing" application pack from the Motor Sports Association UK. You will then have to buy a "Go Racing" pack, have a medical, and then complete an approved course at an approved Racing Driver School (ARDS). The procedure in explained in the pack.Courses are run at Pembrey circuit. Contact the circuit on 01554 891042. You will also need some racing overalls and a helmet. Look in motor sport papers. Autosport or Motoring News, or go to the For Sale page. If you want any technical information (i.e would the car I thinking of buying be eligible?) then contact us or view the regulations and/or register for the championship. (For guidance click here for a list of cars that have competed in the Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Championship)Q. What then? A. Once you have registered you will be sent the relevant race entry form. Simply fill it in and post with the entry fee to the address on the entry form. You will be sent a set of instructions detailed a timetable and other useful instructions. You need to make plans to get to the race track in good time. Follow the instructions, (or ask any of the competitors in your race if it's you very first time) and you should soon find yourself on track and enjoying yourself. (N.B Insurance. A race entry fee to an event with an MSA permit will cover death and bodily injury, but the cover whilst worthwhile is limited. Also it only covers you, not the car. If these are matters of concern you should get quotes from some specialist motorsport insurers.Q. What if I decide I don't want to race, is there anyway else I can get involved? A. Yes!
